Established in 1934 and sprawling over 58 square miles of wetlands, live oaks, and prairies that are home to over 300 species of birds, alligators, bobcats, and even the occasional panther (cue the dramatic music). Q: Is the park stroller-friendly? A: Most paved paths are fine, but a baby carrier is better for trails like the Canopy Walk.
Q: Can I bring kids to Myakka River State Park? A: Absolutely. This park is basically a real-life jungle gym in the great outdoors with better views and fewer plastic slides. Perfect place for a scavenger hunt!
Q: Can we kayak or canoe here? A: You bet. Canoe Rentals are available, or BYOK (bring your own kayak). It’s peaceful, surreal, and very “Old Florida.”

Hiking Trails for Tiny Trekkers and Grown-Up Globetrotters.
- Myakka Canopy Walkway & Tower Trail (0.8 miles): Hands-down the coolest trail in the park. A suspension bridge through the treetops, plus a 74-foot tower with jaw-dropping panoramic views. It’s the best way to see ALL of Myakka and surrounding areas!
- Birdwalk Trail (0.2 miles): Super short and perfect for toddlers or grandparents. A boardwalk leads out over marshlands teeming with birds. You might get lucky and spot a Roseate Spoonbill!
- Myakka Trail Hiking Loop (up to 39 miles): Choose your own adventure. You can do a couple of miles or go full wilderness warrior with multi-day treks.
Pro Tip: Bring bug spray. The mosquitos here train in MMA. You’re welcome.

Paddle Power: Kayaking & Canoeing the Myakka.
If you’ve never glided through misty wetlands with herons flying overhead and gators sunbathing nearby, this is your moment.
- Where to launch: There are launches near the Upper Myakka Lake and the South Pavilion. JUST KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR GATORS.
- Rentals available: Yes, at the Myakka Outpost.
- Best time to paddle: Early morning or sunset for max serenity and wildlife.

Be prepared to paddle past lily pads, turtles, and maybe even a river otter or two. It’s like National Geographic, but you’re in the scene. WANDER to Adventure Kayak Outfitters for a cool guided kayak paddle down the Myakka River!
PRO TIP: If you plan to kayak during the dry season, water levels will be low and you will roll into shallow water in certain areas. Be prepared to be hiking parks of the river, dragging your kayak or canoe.

Camping: Under the Stars, With Gator Serenades.
Camping at Myakka is so much fun! Myakka has 90 campsites with water, electric, and fire rings – plus 6 log cabins if glamping is more your family’s vibe.

Camping is divided into three sections: Palmetto Ridge and Old Prairie are located near the park entrance, and Big Flats Campground, our FAVORITE, is located near Upper Myakka Lake and the Myakka Outpost. Palmetto Ridge offers full hookups and gravel pads, while Old Prairie and Big Flats are both dirt.
- Cabins: Air conditioning + rustic charm = yes, please.
- Tent sites: Shady, private, and perfect for s’mores and spooky campfire stories.
- Hammock camping is permitted on campsite numbers 7, 8, 11, 15, 23, 27, 33 and 48. A limited number of hammocks are designated on each of these sites based on number of appropriate trees available.
- Booking tip: Reserve early, especially in cooler months (Nov–Mar). Are you a Florida resident? PERFECT! Take advantage of early booking! For reservations, visit the Florida State Parks reservations website or call 800-326-3521 or TDD 888-433-0287.

A dump station is located near Old Prairie Campground. Laundry facilities are available to all campers in Old Prairie and Palmetto Ridge campgrounds. All campsites are located within 40 yards of restroom facilities with hot showers.

- Canopy Tower: Golden hour from 74 feet up? Yes, yes, and yes.
- Birdwalk Boardwalk: Quiet, serene, and surrounded by marshland beauty.

- Prairie Flats: Ok…this is the BEST sunset watching area! Located by the Big Flats Campground and Myakka Outpost, grab some chairs, your phone for INSTAGRAMMABLE pics, and the best wildlife watching!
