Welcome to the REAL FLORIDA.
Highlands Hammock is part magical and otherworldly. It’s what Florida used to be before the “mouse”…wild and natural.

As kids, it’s where you camped with Girl Scouts, had church outings, and picnicked. We would play on the catwalk with giant gators all around us having a ball.

So imagine rediscovering this natural outdoor playground again as an adult! Highlands Hammock State Park will make you feel like a kid again exploring all its natural beauty.

You’ll Also Love It Because…
It offers the opportunity to unplug, quiet our brains, and take it all in. There’s something to be said about taking a seat in a swamp and just being still…

A Walk Through History.
Established in 1931, Central Florida’s Highlands Hammock is among Florida’s first state parks, predating the official Florida State Park System. Its creation was largely fueled by the community’s desire to protect its unique flora and fauna from logging and development.

During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a pivotal role in developing the park’s infrastructure, including its scenic drive and iconic boardwalks. Today, you can still see remnants of their craftsmanship, a testament to their hard work and vision for conservation.

The park also houses the CCC Museum, a small but fascinating exhibit dedicated to the history of the corps and its contributions to Florida’s state parks. Visiting the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped the landscape we now cherish.
Why Highlands Hammock State Park Stands Out.
Trails for Every Adventurer
Highlands Hammock boasts an impressive network of nature trails that cater to all skill levels and located on the loop drive. Whether you’re a casual stroller or a hardcore trekker, you’ll find a path that suits your pace.

- Cypress Swamp Trail: This fan-favorite boardwalk trail takes you through a lush, water-filled cypress swamp. Keep your eyes peeled for wading birds, turtles, and even the occasional alligator.
- Richard Lieber Memorial Trail: Named after the father of America’s state park system, this trail offers a serene walk through towering oaks and cabbage palms.
- Wild Orange Grove Trail: For those seeking a slightly more challenging hike, this trail meanders through pine flatwoods and scrub habitats.
- Alexander Blair Big Oak Trail: Named for the park’s chief engineer, this is a short trail that offers the unique opportunity to see the Big Oak that died years ago. The gnarled lower trunk of this giant live oak, with a girth of 36 feet, is a must-see destination
- Ancient Hammock Trail: Primitive Florida at its best.
- Young Hammock Trail: Discover how pineland has transitioned into the hammock as a result of fire exclusion.
- Fern Garden Trail. Have your camera ready to capture the yellow-crowned night heron or the many swimming gators.
Each trail offers its unique slice of the park’s delicate ecosystem and natural wonders, making it worthwhile to explore more than one.

Pedal Through Paradise
Cyclists, rejoice! Highlands Hammock features a paved three-mile bike loop that winds through ancient forests and open hammocks. The loop is perfect for a leisurely ride and provides access to several of the park’s hiking trails.

Mountain bikers can venture onto unpaved paths for a more rugged experience. Bike rentals are available at the Hammock Inn Concession, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own gear.
- Helmets are highly recommended for all cyclists, and Florida law requires helmets for cyclists ages 16 and under. Helmets are available for loan at the Hammock Inn.
- Call the Hammock Inn at 863-402-0061 for bike rental fees and more information.

Camping Under the Stars
If a day isn’t enough to soak in the beauty of Highlands Hammock, why not stay the night? The park offers a well-maintained family campground with single-family campsites for tents, RVs, a primitive wilderness campground, and even a group tent campground.

This full-facility campground offers amenities including restrooms, hot showers, a fire ring, and picnic tables, ensuring a comfortable experience without compromising the rustic charm. Imagine waking up to the sounds of birds chirping and the rustle of leaves—a perfect start to any day.
PRO TIP- Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance. For reservations, visit the Florida State Parks reservations website or call 800-326-3521 or TDD 888-433-0287.

Photographic Opportunities
For photographers, Highlands Hammock is a dream come true. The interplay of light and shadow in the hammock, the vibrant greens of the flora, and the shimmering waters of the swamps create endless opportunities for stunning shots. Whether you’re a professional or an amateur, your camera roll will thank you.

A Biodiversity Hotspot
Highlands Hammock boasts one of the most diverse ecosystems in Florida. Its ancient hardwood hammock is home to towering oaks draped in Spanish moss, rare species like the Florida panther, and over 150 species of birds.

The park’s elevated boardwalk trails allow visitors to explore these habitats without disturbing the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
Keep an eye out for:
- Variety of Birds: The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with species like wood storks, barred owls, and red-shouldered hawks making frequent appearances.
- Mammals: White-tailed deer, bobcats, and even the elusive Florida panther have been spotted.
- Reptiles and Amphibians: From alligators to tree frogs, even gopher tortoises, the park’s waterways are teeming with life.

Activities Galore.
Beyond hiking, biking, and camping, Highlands Hammock offers a variety of activities to keep visitors engaged. Join ranger-guided tours of the park to learn more about the park’s history and ecosystem or jump on the tram tour to explore more of the park.
Attend one of the park’s special events, like stargazing nights or guided wildlife walks. For the young (and young at heart), the playground and picnic pavilions provide the perfect setting for a family day out.

Insider Tips for Your Visit.
- Arrive Early: The park can get busy, especially during weekends and holidays. Arriving early ensures you get a good parking spot and the chance to enjoy the trails before they fill up.
- Bug Spray is Your Best Friend: While the park’s beauty is captivating, Florida’s mosquitoes can be relentless. Be prepared with insect repellent to keep them at bay.
- Check the Weather: Florida’s weather is notoriously fickle. Check the forecast before heading out and pack accordingly.
- Don’t Skip the Visitor Center: The visitor center not only provides a wealth of information about the park but also houses the CCC Museum, which is well worth a visit.
- Bring a Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated while reducing waste. There are refill stations available throughout the park.
- Grab Sour Orange Ice Cream at the Hammock Inn. It’s super delicious!
