Scenic Trails & Wild Adventures
Hiking at Hillsborough River State Park offers an unforgettable adventure through lush landscapes and scenic trails. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking to enjoy a peaceful walk, the park’s diverse trails cater to all levels.Â

The park boasts over seven miles of nature trails. The popular River Rapids Trail will take you to a rare set of Class II rapids — a unique sight in Florida’s otherwise calm waters and a great spot to take a seat and drink in the scenery.

For an easier stroll through this breathtaking oasis, try the Baynard Trail, which winds through pine and oak hammocks. Don’t forget to bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent for a comfortable hike.
Explore the beauty of the river, spot wildlife, and enjoy the tranquility of nature – it’s the perfect escape just a short walk away! Check out our Friends at Florida Hikes for an in-depth review of the extensive trail system.

Hiking Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and bring insect repellent, especially in warmer months. Due to increased rains in spring and summer, seasonal flooding occurs throughout the park. Visit Hillsborough River State Park for flooding and trail closures.
Paddling the River
What better way to explore than by kayak and canoe along the Hillsborough River! Paddle through scenic waterways, where you might spot turtles, otters, and alligators, OH MY! This popular activity is a FANTASTIC way to explore the beautiful scenery of old Florida.Â

Kayak and canoe rentals are available on-site through the park concessionaire, making it easy to embark on your journey. Just a short walk down the path from parking area #4, launching is super easy.
The park has a 3-mile section of the river that’s scenic and easy for beginner paddlers and a 30-mile Designated Paddling Trail from Hillsborough River State Park to Rowlett Park in Tampa. Check at the ranger station for any updated or closed river sections.

Kayaking Tip: Mornings are the best time to paddle when the river is calm, and wildlife is most active. Plan on encountering alligators along the way- give them plenty of space and NEVER point your kayak or canoe directly at them.Â
Make a Splash at Hillsborough River State Park
While you can’t swim in the Hillsborough River itself (alligators and possible bull sharks, anyone?), there’s a designated swimming pool within the park. The pool is typically open from spring to fall — check ahead for exact dates and availability. It’s the perfect spot to cool off on a hot Florida day.

Pool Tip:Â Call ahead to confirm pool hours as they may change due to maintenance or weather.
Ride & Explore – Biking & Bike Rentals
Another great way for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy Hillsborough River State Park is to bring your own mountain bike or rent one from the park store to cruise the park’s scenic roads. While there aren’t designated bike trails, the paved roads offer a peaceful ride through the natural surroundings.Â

Biking Tip:Â Helmets are required for riders under 16 but are recommended for everyone.

Thank you for the post! I enjoyed learning about the national park and now want to make a trip to Florida!
Thanks, Samara! You’ll love it!
Okay, so the lint roller to remove ticks is a genius suggestion. It looks like a beautiful place. We live in PA Appalachian mountains so it’s definitely not quite the same climate, but the tick problem is huge for us some years!
Ohhh…now your area sounds amazing!!
So cool! I would love to go see this. It looks awesome on the pictures and your commentary sure made it sound really special! Love it!
Thanks, Heidi! Hillsborough River State Park is amazing!
Thanks so much!
I would LOVE to do the kayaking trip! Even though it sounds a little bit dangerous with the Alligators.. 🙂
You would live it!
Looks so beautiful and fun! Makes me so excited for summer camping. We still have a few months to wait for that here in north Idaho!
Thanks! We LOVE summer camping!
