If Florida were a novel, Tomoka State Park would be one of its most intriguing chapters. Tucked away near the sunny city of Ormond Beach, hidden among the tidal marshes, this 2,000-acre stretch of wild, natural beauty offers a magical blend of ancient history, lush scenery, and—you guessed it—plenty of gators.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a birding buff, enjoying a Florida family vacation, or just looking to escape the chaos of I-95, Tomoka State Park is the peaceful playground you didn’t know you needed.

Why Visit Tomoka State Park?
Out of all the Florida State Parks, Tomoka still stands out in a state that boasts more parks than a Labrador retriever’s dream. This beautiful place is located where the Halifax River and Tomoka Rivers converge and is an ecological haven and a historical treasure trove rolled into one. Think Spanish moss lazily draped in the live oak hammock, whispering palms, and the West Indian Manatee floating serenely through brackish estuaries.

As you cruise down a portion of the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, specifically Old Dixie Highway and Walter Boardman Lane, your cares are melted away. Where moss-covered oak canopies sway in the breeze and the drive alone along the Intracoastal, is a million-dollar view.

But Tomoka State Park isn’t just about pretty views (though it has plenty). It’s where you’ll find:
- Boating adventures with easy access along the Tomoka River and Intracoastal Waterway
- Nature trails shaded by towering live oaks
- Rare bird species that make binoculars sexy again
- Historical landmarks with tales of Timucuan tribes, once thriving community, and Spanish explorers
- Fantastic fishing spots along the banks of the Tomoka River where the mullet practically jump into your boat (well, almost)

A Brief Stroll Through Time.
Tomoka isn’t just rich in biodiversity—it’s loaded with history. This area was once the home of the Timucuan Indians, Native Americans who thrived here for thousands of years.
Take a short hike (also wheelchair accessible), where you’ll discover the centerpiece of the park, a towering statue called Chief Tomokie, which honors a mythical Timucuan warrior.
Spoiler alert: there’s a legend of Tomokie, a sacred cup, and a splash of betrayal. PERFECT makings of a campfire ghost story!

Fast-forward a few centuries, and the area became a British sugar plantation, then a bustling fishing village in the 19th century. You can still spot remnants of old structures tucked away along the trails. If the hardwood hammock trees could talk, these would be dishing some serious historical gossip.

Outdoor Activities: Where Nature and Fun Shake Hands.
1. Kayaking and Canoeing
The Tomoka River is calm, scenic, and totally Insta-worthy. Whether you bring your kayak or rent one from the park kayak rentals, paddling through these waters is like gliding through a nature documentary—except you’re the star.
Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, manatees, white-tailed deer, and yes, the occasional gator sunbathing on a log like it’s on vacation too. We had a blast wildlife viewing from our kayaks. We see you, giant swallowtail!

2. Hiking and Biking
Tomoka State Park has several trails, but the 0.8-mile Tomoka Trail is the crowd favorite. It loops through a hammock forest and offers views of the river and salt marshes. You might spot armadillos shuffling through the underbrush, gopher tortoises lazily strolling, or ospreys diving for lunch.
For cyclists, the park connects to “The Loop,” Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, a 30+ mile stretch of pure coastal eye candy. This trail gives you easy access to the Atlantic Ocean and other historical areas around Ormond Beach.

3. Bird Watching
Calling all ornithologists (and anyone who’s ever downloaded the Merlin Bird ID app): Tomoka is a birdwatcher’s paradise. It’s part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, and during migration seasons, especially Fall migrations, it transforms into a feathered runway. You’ll see different species of birds from roseate spoonbills to bald eagles. Don’t forget your zoom lens.
4. Fishing and Boating
With access to both saltwater and freshwater species, Tomoka is a dream spot for anglers. Cast a line and you might reel in different species of fish like red drum, snook, or spotted seatrout. The park has a boat ramp and fish cleaning stations, so you can go from “just hooked it” to “just cooked it” with ease.

Don’t forget to pay attention to all the cool marine life of the area while hooking all the important game fish! There are several pods of dolphins ready to entertain you.
PRO TIP- Weather conditions are constantly changing on the water. Windy conditions are no joke and can turn a fun day into a scary one. Before you head out, check the weather conditions with the Ranger Station for any updates.
Camping Under the Stars (and Maybe a Few Curious Raccoons).
Tomoka State Park Campground offers 100 shaded full-facility campsites with water, electric hookups, and access to clean restroom facilities and hot showers. If you’ve ever wanted to wake up to the sound of herons calling instead of your alarm clock, this is the place.

The campground is peaceful, scenic, and occasionally visited by wildlife. This has quickly become one of our FAVORITE Florida State Parks to camp at. Each night offers fun family activities around the large fire circle. Music Bingo anyone?!
Pro tip: Secure your snacks unless you want a raccoon rave at midnight.
Supplies, Snacks & Sass—Tomoka’s Got It All.
Nestled along the scenic Tomoka River, the Tomoka Outpost is more than just a camp store—it’s the park’s unofficial living room. Whether you’re grabbing a snack, picking up camping essentials, or sipping on a cold beverage (they have their very own Tomoka EPA on tap), this air-conditioned haven invites you to kick back and soak in the river views.

With rocking chairs and a repurposed sailboat-turned-table on the patio, it’s the perfect spot to swap stories or watch the world float by. Head out before sunset, grab a drink, and boiled peanuts for a stunning Florida sunset! We promise, it’s BREATHTAKING!

Why Tomoka State Park Should Be on Your Florida Bucket List.
Let’s talk searchability. If you’re looking up things like:
- “Best State Parks near Daytona Beach”
- “Top Kayaking SpotsWhere in Florida”
- “Florida camping with river access”
- “where to see manatees in Florida?”
- or even “historical state parks in Florida”
…you’re probably going to stumble across Tomoka State Park—and for good reason. It checks every box for nature lovers, history nerds, and outdoor adventurers alike. And because it’s not as crowded as Florida’s bigger attractions, you’ll get all the beauty without the bustle.

Insider Tips Before You Go.
- Go early or go late. Midday can be hot and humid, especially in warmer months. Sunrise paddles or golden-hour hikes are pure magic. Head to Tomoka Point for a spectacular sunset.
- Bring insect repellent. This is Florida, not a fairytale. Mosquitoes are real.
- Check the tide charts if you’re boating—some spots get shallow fast.
- Visit the Tomoka Outpost (park store) for snacks, souvenirs, local recommendations, and local gossip.
- The best kayak & canoe launch is next to campsite #11.
- A perfect sunset can be found at The Point & behind the Tomoka Outpost.
Tomoka Is More Than Just a Park—It’s a Vibe!
Tomoka State Park may not have the fanfare of Florida’s mega-theme parks, but it offers something way better: serenity, wild beauty, and a real connection to the land. Whether you’re pitching a tent, casting a line, or paddling through cypress shadows, this park invites you to slow down, look around, and soak in the soul of Old Florida.

So pack your cooler, grab your camera, and head to Tomoka State Park. The gators are waiting (but, you know, from a respectful distance). Happy Wandering!
