THE BUTTERFLY RAINFOREST JOURNEY TO GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA.
Opened in August of 2004, this tropical oasis has more than 50 Lepidoptera species from around the world at any given time. The project underwent many design changes, but, once the collections building and the vivarium were constructed, all that was left was to connect it to the existing museum. Finally completed, the doors were opened to the public and became one of the permanent exhibits.
This new building became the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity. The McGuire Center represents the largest collections-based research education centers in the world focusing on butterflies and moths. Several collections are on display and a great way to see the many artifact collections from cocoons to silks.
The McGuire Center since its inception has taken in over 200,000 specimens including both pinned and papered/layered material. The collections are AMAZING to view and are included in the general admission. It’s one of those fun things that both are SUPER COOL and EDUCATIONAL at the same time! In this “working lab,” you’re able to see UF students and scientists working side-by-side. Pretty sweet!
CHOOSE A FANTASTIC FLORIDA FALL DAY.
Because the “rainforest” is screened and open to the Florida weather, summertime is BRUTAL to come and enjoy how amazing this exhibit is. With sudden thunderstorms, killer humidity, and blazing heat, mid-October to late November is a great time to road trip and visit. You may get lucky and experience gameday in the Swamp at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium! GO GATORS!
Did you know…The Museum offers occasional Museum for Me events, which allow adults and children on the autism spectrum – including their friends, families and caregivers – to explore the Museum at their own pace in a peaceful and less-crowded environment. The events also include hands-on Discovery Carts, sensory maps and a separate quiet space.
FANTASTIC! You’ve navigated to your free parking space. (Several handicap parking spaces are available.) Let the Fall field trip with the family in the BEST college town begin! Head inside to the front desk “ticket sales” to grab your butterfly rainforest tickets and any other special exhibit tickets. We chose to do the Science Up Close: Incredible Insects. Gross and cool!
ONCE INSIDE THIS AMAZING BUTTERFLY EXHIBIT…
Head to your right. At the entrance, you will be greeted by a friendly museum staff member who will quickly give you the run-down and house rules. You can take a guided tour or venture on your own. One step in and you’re transported to a tropical paradise!
As you take your first few steps into the “rainforest,” you get a real sense of this ecosystem. Bromeliads, ferns, flowering plants, birds, fish, and an assortment of other animals that populate this biodome, scurry and flutter about. Tropical trees house several different varieties of birds and make excellent backdrops for the waterfalls.
Did you know…if a hurricane is heading our way, volunteers and staff go in and try to collect all the butterflies they can to protect them until danger has passed!
Take advantage of the many interactive displays as the path takes you along. They list the varieties of gorgeous butterflies and a wealth of other information. This beautiful place beckons you to slow down, relax, and enjoy this natural world that has been created. Other than taking 9 billion photos, THIS offered the PERFECT opportunity to “unplug” for a while!
