If paradise had a postcode, it’d land squarely on Bahia Honda State Park, a sliver of sun-soaked Florida Keys’ hidden beach escape tucked between mile markers 36 and 38.5 on the Overseas Highway. This 524-acre gem in the lower Florida Keys isn’t just another beach stop with iconic Florida scenery. It’s the kind of place that makes you question every life choice that led you to live anywhere else. With its turquoise shallows, historic bridge ruins, magnificent sunsets, and whispering palms, Bahia Honda State Park feels like Old Florida and the Caribbean had a love child.

Let us introduce you to the best ( in our opinion) Florida Keys State Park and one of the most breathtaking under-hyped corners of the Florida Keys…an unforgettable experience and one of the few where you can still pitch a tent under the stars and fall blissfully asleep to the sound of surf instead of traffic. You may just want to stay…

The Lay of the (Island) Land.
The remote island of Bahia Honda Key once served as a pivotal stop on Henry Flagler’s legendary Overseas Railroad, the early 1900s engineering marvel that connected mainland Florida to Key West. When this historical landmark was hit by the 1935 hurricane, it wiped out major parts of the railroad and was too costly to repair.

Portions of the old rail bridge still stand tall, half skeletal, half glorious, now the park’s most iconic backdrop. It’s a postcard moment waiting to happen ESPECIALLY at sunset!
Today, the old Bahia Honda bridge watches over some of the clearest, gin-clear waters in the Keys, three picture-perfect beaches, a smattering of nature trails, great views, and a thriving coral reef just offshore. Whether you’re a beach bum, a history nerd, or a campfire devotee, or looking for the perfect outdoor adventure, Bahia Honda State Park gives you reasons to linger on this island paradise.

The Beaches: Three Flavors of Florida Heaven.
Sandspur Beach
This one’s the showstopper of a Florida Keys beach. Imagine this: powdery white sand, calm turquoise water, and enough palm shade to keep your drink cool while you forget what day it is. PERFECTION!

It’s the largest of Bahia Honda’s beaches, wrapping around the Atlantic Ocean side and stretching for nearly a mile. It’s an excellent place for swimming, shelling, and pretending your beach towel is a yacht deck.
Loggerhead Beach
This tropical paradise sits a little quieter, a touch wilder, and the perfect blend of natural beauty. Loggerhead sits farther down the Atlantic side, perfect for snorkeling in shallow waters and spotting tropical fish darting through seagrass. Bring your mask because you might see rays gliding by like underwater kites.

 Calusa Beach
Tiny but mighty. Calusa faces the Gulf side and gives you the park’s most iconic view – the old rail bridge rising out of the water like the bones of a sunken ship. It’s the best sunset spot, hands down, and also the most family-friendly with picnic areas and day use areas nearby, and plenty of water activities for the entire family.

What to Bring to Bahia Honda State Park.
Planning a Bahia Honda tranquil escape?! Here’s your packing cheat sheet: half practical, half survival kit for this tropical destination.
- Reef-safe sunscreen: Skip your regular sunscreen…it damages our coral reefs. Choose a biodegradable, ocean-safe option. The reef thanks you!
- Snorkel gear: Don’t miss out exploring the reef. You can bring your own gear, rent, or take a tour.
- Quick-dry towel: Perfect for stashing in a backpack and hopping between beaches, and will dry faster than your sunscreen.
- Bug spray: No-see-ums & our official State Bird…AHEM…the mosquito…take NO PRISONERS!
- Reusable water bottle: Hydrate Ya’ll! The heat and sun in the Florida Keys are right on the surface of hell! It’s hot. It’s intense. See next item.
- Liquid IV: Trust us! You want this handy!
- Beach umbrella: Shade is limited, and the rays are INTENSE. Perfect for lounging and enjoying balmy sea breezes.
- Cash or card: For entrance fees, kayak rentals, and the surprisingly good snacks at the snack bar.
- Camping gear: Tent, sleeping bag, grill supplies, lantern, and extra batteries. Check out our BEST budget options!
- Light jacket or hoodie: Balmy breezes get cool at night.
- Water shoes: Stepping on coral bits is kinda like stepping on Legos in the middle of the night!. Your feet will thank you!
- Camera or phone with waterproof case: You’ll want proof of these INSTAGRAMMABLE blues.

INSIDER TIP: Bring patience. Due to the park’s popularity, it’ll reach maximum capacity and parking fills early…ESPECIALLY on weekends and holidays. Arrive before 10 a.m. for the best spots and longest beach time. You’ll want to do all the fun things and see all the amazing places on Bahia Honda!
Camping Under the Florida Keys’ Stars.
If you’ve ever dreamed of camping by the ocean, and honestly, who hasn’t, Bahia Honda is your golden ticket to paradise. The park offers three campgrounds: Buttonwood, Sandspur, and Bayside, each with its own flavor of island magic.
- Buttonwood Campground (sites #1–48) is RV-friendly, with electric hookups, showers, and access to the boat ramps. You’ll get breezy views and easy beach access. This tropical hammock is our favorite for sunset views and plenty of shade from the Florida sun.
- Sandspur Campground (when open) offers tent sites between sea grapes and palms with views of the Atlantic and those soft white sands right out back. ( A good portion of these sites are direct sun, so bring a shade. Portions are still being rebuilt after Hurricane Irma devastated it.
- Bayside Campground is the minimalist option, accessible only by bridge, ideal for smaller tents and campers who prefer tranquility over amenities. BEFORE YOU BOOK THIS AREA- Check the height of your vehicle. There is a bridge that ONLY small cars can get under to access this area.

Prefer four walls and A/C? Bahia Honda also rents three cabins perched above the water on stilts, with porches overlooking the bay. These book out months and sometimes a year in advance.
PRO TIP: Hey Florida WANDERERS! Reservations open 11 months ahead through the Florida State Parks system, and they go fast. Set an alarm and have your coffee ready. All booked?! We love to use ARVIE & WANDERING LABS to score cancellations.

Imagine grilling fresh fish you just caught as the Florida sun dips behind the overseas railway bridge, with herons strutting by like they own the place. When night falls, the stars put on a show city dwellers can barely imagine.
Things to Do Beyond the Beach.
Snorkeling at Looe Key Reef
Bahia Honda runs guided daily snorkeling tours with Coral Reef Park Co. to nearby Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, one of the most spectacular coral reefs in North America. Expect parrotfish, angelfish, and maybe a passing sea turtle if you’re lucky. The water is so clear it looks digitally enhanced. Depths vary from 5 feet to 70 feet, making this a perfect spot for all levels of snorkeling enthusiasts.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding.
Rent a kayak and trace the shoreline or paddle out to the small offshore islands. You’ll likely spot manatees, nurse sharks, or a school of tarpon cruising the flats. Keep an eye on tide schedules and the daily weather. Florida is notorious for its funky weather patterns.
Bridge Walk
The short, quick trail up to the old bridge ruins is a great place for one of the best panoramic views in the Keys. It’s a mix of nostalgia, sea breezes, and salt air. Totally worth visiting and one of those rare views of the beautiful water that looks even better in person than on Instagram.

 Nature Trails
There’s a short inland nature trail winding through a coastal hammock forest, offering glimpses of the island’s plants and gorgeous butterflies, including the endangered Miami blue butterfly , a tiny flash of color making a quiet comeback here.
Practical Tips for Your Bahia Honda Tropical Escape.
- Hours: Open daily from 8 a.m. to sundown, 365 days a year.
- Entry Fee: Around $8 per vehicle. Bikers and walkers pay less. You can also purchase a 12-visit pass.
- Facilities: Showers, restrooms, picnic pavilions, a complete gift shop, and a small concession service provider stand selling snacks, souvenirs, and snorkel rentals.
- Wi-Fi: Nonexistent. And that’s exactly how it should be.
- Wildlife Etiquette: Don’t feed or chase anything with fins, feathers, that looks like it could be from Jurassic Park, or flippers. Bahia Honda’s beauty depends on its balance.
- Park Staff are courteous and helpful…BUT…live on Keys’ time. They’re happy to answer some questions, but not a hundred. Trust us….rookie mistake!

Why Bahia Honda Tops Every Florida Keys Bucket List.
Unlike bustling Key West or tourist-heavy Key Largo, Bahia Honda feels timeless. It’s a favorite destination of ours in the Florida Keys, where you’re hypnotized by the water and waves, and lulled by the ocean breezes instead of traffic and tiki bars. We do LOVE a good Key’s Happy Hour…
The beaches are magical, the water glows in impossible shades of blue, and the sunsets look painted by someone who knew what they were doing. (Happy little palm trees!)

For anyone wanting to digitally detox, road-trippers, and salty-haired romantics, Bahia Honda State Park offers the perfect pause button on life. Here, the days are blissfully long, the light turns honey-gold, and time slows down just enough to remind you what living actually feels like. It’s the best place to re-center.
