Washington Oaks Gardens State Park was once part of a large plantation owned by Mr. Owen D. Young, a prominent businessman and distant relative of George Washington,  and his wife, Louise Powis Clark. The Young’s built their winter retreat here; the buildings and gardens of the Washington Oaks Historic District are part of the Young’s legacy.

In 1964, the property was donated to the state of Florida, and it has since been preserved as a public park. The park is renowned for its formal gardens, which feature a blend of native and exotic plants, as well as its unique coquina rock formations along the beach—a rare natural feature on Florida’s Atlantic Coast.

  • Where to fish: Surf fish from the beach or fish from the seawall on the Matanzas River 
  • What to catch: Common catches include whiting and blue fish in the surf, and redfish, drum, flounder, and trout along the seawall 
  • Licenses: Non-residents need a Florida Saltwater fishing license, but Florida residents do not need one when fishing from the shore.
  • Take one of the fun saltwater fishing clinics!
    • Who can attend: Adults 18 and up, and youth ages 8–17
    • What to learn: How to identify saltwater fish, use a rod and reel, and apply conservation tips
    • What’s included: All equipment and bait are provided

Pro Tip: Check the tide charts before you go for the best results. The fishing pier near the picnic area is a great place to set up.

  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.
