SO…WHO IS STEVE SPURRIER!? (FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW.)
If people like you too much, it’s probably because they are beating you.
– Steve Spurrier
May I present to you the iconic Coach Spurrier and why we LOVE him here. He’s a Florida legend with savage quotes, made visors fashionable, and has a career making College Football History.
Steve Spurrier was a Florida Gator quarterback who went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 1966. He was a first round draft pick by the San Francisco 49s in the 1967 NFL draft. He played for ten seasons for the National Football League before coaching for 38 years. His roster included Duke University for three seasons, the University of Florida for 12 seasons, and the University of South Carolina, for 10.5 seasons.
FUN FACT: Because of his great football successes as a coach, he became known as “The Head Ball Coach.”
…AFTER HIS COACHING DAYS
Spurrier’s unprecedented success resulted in 282 wins and an 82% career-winning percentage with the Gators! Along with National titles, SEC Championships, and countless awards he knew how to run a successful football program.
As an ambassador and consultant now for the University of Florida’s Athletic Department, and in recognition of his contributions to the University and its football programs, the Gator home field became, “Steve Spurrier- Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium” IN 2016.
FUN FACT: Gator legends Tim Tebow and Danny Wuerffel join legendary head football coach Steve Spurrier as University of Florida Heisman Trophy winners. GO GATORS!
STEVE SPURRIER’S GRIDIRON GRILLE JOURNEY TO GAINESVILLE.
Spurrier’s daughter, Amy was the first to plant the thought. She tells her dad he should open a restaurant to house all his trophies and memorabilia. He thought that was a great idea. After speaking with his business manager Freddie Wehbe, the 442-seat restaurant was set in motion thus creating an “immersive dining experience” in the heart of GATOR NATION.
Boasting over 50 years of history, this isn’t just your average, run-of-the-mill sports restaurant/bar that’s been overly played out. It exudes class Friends! From the gorgeous main dining room, with a full table set for the culinary extravaganza to a fun premier rooftop bar, Visors serving up a magical drink menu. Oh, did I mention that while you dine, TVs, tastefully low, continuously play game highlights and Gator greats!?
A WINNING ENVIRONMENT.
From the moment you step through the front doors, you know you’re about to embark on a football adventure. Everywhere you look, there are football memorabilia to explore. From his Heisman Trophy and championship rings to the wall of visors Steve Spurrier became known for. Awards he won as a player and coach also grace this space with the many photos of Spurrier and various Gator football players.
You might get to meet and greet the legend himself as we did! Bonus…he likes to play trivia with the diners and give out some pretty sick door prizes! The finishing touch was the photo op after. It made THIS Gator fan do a victory dance! This action-packed atmosphere even has a podcast booth where you may catch a recording in the making. I MEAN, really!?
TOUCH DOWN TO GRIDIRON GOURMET.
It seems to me that in the restaurant business, your best defense is a great space. And your best offense is great food.
– Steve Spurrier
Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille goes all in with its field-to-fork deliciousness with 70% of the ingredients served being locally sourced from Florida dairies, farms, and producers to ensure the highest quality.
So…what kind of food do they serve!? DELICIOUS! Think Southern on crack that went to Europe! Seriously, it’s fantastic! Feeling like a steak!? Maybe you’re in the mood for a wild mushroom risotto topped with short ribs or a grilled cheese paired with a luxurious tomato soup. It’s game day and time to get your brunch on! Head over on Saturdays and Sundays for a plate of Chicken and Wuerffels and build-your-own omelets for a culinary experience.
I need to confess… a little secret. It’s about one of the magical desserts…and…if I’m being completely honest…and we hadn’t been out with friends… I would have polished off the ENTIRE plate of warm chocolate chip cookies….BY MYSELF! Ok…I feel much better. When I say these cookies are straight-up crack cookies, THEY ARE! Here’s the scoop. It’s one of the many SECRET recipes Jerri Spurrier, Coach Spurrier’s wife contributed to this awesome menu and that you need to have in your life!
